Bitten by a venomous snake!
Hi there!
This week I was going to talk about a term I recently came across called “Life Dysmorphia” but I scraped that draft because last night our domestic helper/aunty ran into the house screaming that she had been bitten by a snake!
Here’s what happened:
At around 9pm, the kids were just brushing their teeth and getting ready for bed. I was in the kitchen filling their water bottles when the front door slammed open and a hysterical Emma came in shouting that she had been bitten by a snake on her nightly walk with our dog, Figgy.
She was in a total panic because the snake she had been bitten by was the venomous Bamboo Pit Viper!
The house was full because my mum, sister, her partner and infant are all staying with us. It was instant chaos.
My husband got on the phone to the ambulance whilst I tried to calm Emma down and others looked up what to do when bitten.
My youngest was hysterically crying so mum was trying to calm her down too.
Within 20 minutes, the ambulance arrived and she was taken to hospital. She’s absolutely fine. They gave her anti-venom, antibiotics and kept her in overnight. Turns out the bite wasn’t very deep and not much venom got through. Phew.
A google search revealed that only 30 people a year get bitten by a BpV snake – in a population of 7.5 million that’s 0.0004%!
Anyway, all’s well that ends well, as they say.
So back to this term I was going to talk about. “Life Dysmorphia. It’s a term used to describe a sense of dissatisfaction with your life and circumstances. Negative thoughts about your career, your body, your relationships, your possessions, your life path etc.
In today’s modern society, there is a lot of moaning about why our lives aren’t as good as we want them to be. When we really stop for a minute and think about it though, we have never lived in more abundance than we do today. I often forget just how lucky we are and what amazing lives we lead. It’s so easy to take all this for granted and to see things through a negative lens.
I mean take a moment to really think about it, for most of us:
We have access to running water and are able to take hot showers every day (something that wasn’t widely available until a few decades ago!)
We get to sleep in a comfy bed at night
There are trees in the world (I firkin love trees!)
Someone somewhere loves you very much
We can simply smile to make ourselves feel better
We aren’t in hospital recovering from a venomous snake bite!
The list goes on and on...
This realisation hit me like a lightening bolt and gave me a real sense of gratitude. Especially when the alarm went off at 5am this morning as it was time to iron the uniforms and make breakfast and lunch for the kids. Something Emma does for us EVERY morning!
Gratitude, I am learning, is such a crucial part of this journey as without it we remain stuck and our energy is stagnant.
I’d love to hear what you are grateful for and invite you to hit reply to this email and give me 3 things that are on your list.
Have a wonderful Saturday enjoying all the things your life has to offer 💫
With love,
